What happens at 8 weeks pregnant?

At 8 weeks pregnant, you’re nearing the end of your second month, and things are really revving up — both for your baby’s development and for the symptoms you might be feeling. Here’s a closer look at what’s going on at this stage.

Your baby is now about the size of a raspberry or kidney bean, roughly half an inch long. The embryo is uncurling from its earlier C-shape into a straighter, more upright posture, and the tail it had in earlier weeks has disappeared. This week brings some striking developments:

Fingers and toes are forming, though still slightly webbed

Limb buds are becoming more defined, with arms that can even flex

Facial features are sharpening — the eyes, ears, and nose are becoming more distinct, and the tip of the nose and eyelids are visible

The heart has developed from a simple cluster of cells into connected tubes capable of circulating blood, and cardiac activity may be visible on an ultrasound

Early tooth buds have formed in the gums, even though actual teething is many months away

The brain and lungs continue developing rapidly

Common Symptoms at 8 Weeks Pregnant

By 8 weeks, many people are well acquainted with pregnancy symptoms, and it’s common for existing ones to intensify while new ones join in:

Morning sickness — nausea (and sometimes vomiting) that can hit at any time of day, often peaking around week 10 before gradually easing

Fatigue — driven by rising progesterone and the sheer amount of work your body is doing

Breast tenderness — breasts may feel full, sore, or tingly as they prepare for lactation

Food aversions or cravings

Mild cramping

Increased urination

Lower back pain — muscles working harder to support your growing uterus

Bloating, which can make clothes feel snug even without a visible bump

As always, it’s completely normal to experience few or none of these — every pregnancy looks different.

Your Body at 8 Weeks Pregnant

You likely won’t be showing yet. A visible baby bump typically doesn’t appear until somewhere between 12 and 16 weeks for most first pregnancies (often sooner for twins or subsequent pregnancies). That said, real changes are happening internally: your uterus, once about the size of a fist, has grown to roughly the size of a grapefruit. Blood volume is increasing, and healthy first-trimester weight gain is typically only around one to five pounds total — some people gain little to nothing, especially if morning sickness has affected their appetite.

Prenatal Appointments and Testing

If you haven’t already had your first prenatal visit, 8 weeks is a common time for it — or it may already be scheduled for the coming weeks. This is a good opportunity to:

Choose or confirm your healthcare provider

Ask questions about safe exercise, sleep, and travel during pregnancy

Discuss upcoming prenatal testing and screening options

Bring up any symptoms that feel unusual or concerning

Many people also start thinking about when and how to share their pregnancy news around this point, since the end of the first trimester — when miscarriage risk drops significantly — is approaching.

When to Call Your Doctor

Mild cramping and light spotting can be a normal part of early pregnancy, but reach out to your provider if you notice heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, dizziness or fainting, or morning sickness so severe you can’t keep fluids down.

Tips for Week 8

  • Keep taking your prenatal vitamin
  • Eat small, frequent meals to help manage nausea
  • Rest when your body asks for it — fatigue at this stage is real
  • Wear comfortable clothing as bloating sets in
  • Stay hydrated, especially if vomiting is an issue

FAQ

How big is a baby at 8 weeks pregnant?

About the size of a raspberry or kidney bean — roughly half an inch long.

Can you see a heartbeat at 8 weeks pregnant?

Often, yes. By 8 weeks, the heart has developed into a structure that circulates blood, and cardiac activity is frequently visible on ultrasound.

Why do I feel so nauseous at 8 weeks pregnant?

Morning sickness is driven by rising hCG, estrogen, and progesterone levels, which typically peak around week 10 before starting to ease over the following weeks.

Should I be showing at 8 weeks pregnant?

Not usually. Most people don’t develop a visible bump until 12 to 16 weeks. Not showing yet at 8 weeks is completely normal.

How much weight should I have gained by 8 weeks pregnant?

Healthy first-trimester weight gain overall is typically only one to five pounds, so it’s normal to have gained very little — or nothing at all — by week 8, especially with morning sickness in the mix.
